Bullion Coins
Are “gold coins” and “gold bullion coins” one and the same?

In the most restrictive definition, gold bullion coins are coins that are minted especially to serve the needs of bullion investors. These typically are minted with well-defined fractions of a Troy ounce of gold, and are prominently labeled with their gold weight. They may or may not also have a (nominal) face value.
Examples include the original gold bullion coin – the South African Krugerrand – and newer examples like the US American Gold Eagle, the Canadian Maple Leaf, and the Austrian Philharmonic. All of these are typically available in sizes such as 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 Troy ounces.
There are many other types of gold coins which are primarily of interest as bullion coins, rather than for their numismatic (coin collector) value. These include certain years of Mexican gold Pesos, Austrian Coronas and Ducats, and others, which were re-struck in large numbers while bearing certain constant years. (For instance, Mexican 2 and 2-1/2 Pesos gold coins bearing the date “1945″ were re-struck in large numbers for many years thereafter.) These also include gold coins which, while not minted as bullion coins, were nonetheless widely used in trade and thus frequently have high mintages, such as certain years of British sovereigns, and thus these also sell much like bullion coins.
The basic and broadest difference is that if a coin – regardless of whether it was intentionally minted as a bullion coin – derives its value from being a “hunk of gold” and thus its price fluctuates with the gold price, it’s a gold bullion coin. If, due to some combination of demand and scarcity, it is of premium value to coin collectors and thus its price is determined mostly by collectors, rather than the price of gold, then it’s a numismatic gold coin. That’s a somewhat fuzzier line, but it will probably do for many purposes.
As to where to buy gold coins:
- Your local coin dealer(s).
- Internet coin dealers, particularly those that specialize in bullion coins, like APMEX, Kitco, Monex, or Northwest Territorial Mint (which despite its name is a bullion dealer).
- eBay, which has a number of categories of interest under their Coins & Paper Money category, such as Bullion, Coins: US > Gold, Coins: World > Gold, and more.
